welcome to parkway spotlight. a lot of times you hear about radio dealing with donating your vehicle. i have a unique program called vehicles for change. joining me is the president martin schwartz. thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> how is vehicles for change different from other programs? >> we are different in the way we use the cars. it is to provide transportation to low income families to escape poverty. we take the car if it is in good condition and we repair it and identify a family that needs a car to get to and from employment to escape poverty. >> tell me about walk in your shoes program. >> what we did in october 4ñ4s had a program we wanted to bring to light to the public the trials that your families

go through without an automobile. we had six local dignitaries. one of them was jim malone. was was susan with the daily record. what they did was traveled with one of our recipients the route they had to go before they got their car. >> i can't imagine being without a car. what was that like having to go through what these people go through on a daily basis. >> i did it as well. i have been running the program 13 years. it was eye opening for me to see what they did on a daily basis. we went with a woman with 2- year-old twins and a 4-year-old daughter. it took us two hours to get to her first job. i said how often do you do this? she said five days a week. it was amazing how accepting she was of her fate. and she was going to do it every day because she was doing it for her children. >> tell me, how do you select

your recipients? >> we don't select them. we work with other organizations that identify the family's force. we might work with a domestic violence shelter. job training program. job readiness program. homeless shelter. what they do is identify a family who really is doing all the things they need to do to make difference in their life. they are working. they are attending classes. they are doing a number of different things to survive but they just can't get ahead without an automobile. >> i can understand that. another great part of your program, vehicles for change is the tax donation. tell me about that. >> one of the big differences between our program and any other program that tax car donations is the tax law allows us to provide a better tax

deduction to their donors. we get cars that have 250,000 miles at auction. that donor gets what we sell the car for. if we get a car in good condition that goes to lower income family our donor deducts fair market value. that's huge. it is twice as much as a car that sells at auction. >> tell me how people can get involved? is there a website to go to? tnyçeasiest way to go through û vehic for change.org. on our website they can to donate your car. there is a form you fill out. it takes a couple of minutes. we ask a lot of questions about the automobile. so we can determine what we can do with the vehicle. does it run?

does it have body damage? it is simple. it comes to us. we let the donor know what we can do with the car and what their tax deduction will be. as an easy process. >> what do you see in your future for the company. >> today is exciting. we are going to settlement on a big building we have purchased in baltimore. just in baltimore county. it is 33,000 square feet. our goal is to expand our program to also start providing automotive training. we'll train mechanics and detailers. we have a state contract in maryland to work cars through maryland. we expect to do more cars. last year we awarded 465 cars to families. this year we'll award 510 cars. >> congratulations on the big day for you martin schwartz. thank you very much for being with me. vehicles for change. see what you can do to donate. thank you for for joining us on maryland spotlight.
